6/30/2009 Nokia phones and the S60 platform problemsI really like my new Nokia E71. It's solid hardware and works generally really well.
But when I first got it, it took me a few days to figure it out. Using the S60 interface that is. Applications, settings and icons are all over the place! Unity and focus is sorely lacking! It takes an effort to learn to use the phone. And I need Google to check where to find certain settings. Argh.
Then there are the Nokia applications and services. Why on earth is every service and application limited to some weird set of specific phone models? Well other than apparently every single Nokia phone seems to have a different set of hardware and operating system features.
Compared to the iPod Touch (no phone), that I've used for over 6 months now, it seems Apple is 2-4 years ahead of the curve. And Nokia is standing still with S60.
Here's what I want to see Nokia phones do:
I doubt I'll buy another Nokia phone, unless the platform gets much more attention. It looks like it hasn't been updated in several years! My ancient Nokia 6600 is 6 years old and feels pretty much the same. I hope the E71 will stay in the game for a few years, but based on past Nokia performance, my shiny E71 will be ancient technology next year with irrelevant updates and unsupported services... (I hope not, I hope not... but I fear it will...) ...
A few positive notes:
6/26/2009 Photo Gallery at PicasaI moved my Photo Gallery to Picasa. Hopefully I can settle on it.
(I was hitting the free limit of Flickr and the Spaces gallery seemed like a weird add-on) 4/28/2009 Windows Live and Social NetworkingWindows Live has jumped on the social network, and now allows profile to connect to various sites, like Facebook and Digg.
Looks promising.
I have to admit that it already takes a bit of juggling to manage all my sites. Like currently Facebook seems to be my bloggin tool, leaving this (and others) services a bit stale...
Exiting times :-) 2/16/2009 New Photos and VideoUusia Kuvia TäälläLaitoin nipun kuluvan vuoden kuvia tähän samalle sivustolle. Oliver Photo Gallery.
4/30/2008 Took me long enough to create a Twitter account. I think it fits me better than "real" blog posts. We'll see. 4/7/2008 Life on Mars (Sub-TV)Tänään alkaa mainio Life on Mars. Maanantaisin, Sub-TV, klo 21:00.
Katsokaa ihmeessä!
Myös jatkosarja, Ashes to Ashes on erittäin laadukas.
Hmm...
Onneksi en ole masentuvaa tyyppiä. Kunhan valitan. 2/18/2008 LuistelukuviaJoel LuisteleeTässä vaihteeksi Joelin luistelua. 2/5/2008 Canon IXUS 860ISThe kids broke my PowerShot (bent lens) so I needed a new camera. I got the Canon IXUS 860IS. It has a fairly rare 28mm wide shot that will really make a difference - more scenery, more people, etc. And with the optical image stabilizer I can leave the flash off more often. Also macro shooting has improved a lot. And the face tracking is kinda neat. Not really the focusing, but it also adjusts exposure to make sure faces are visible. I like it. 2/1/2008 Xbox360 and the Red Rings of DeathMy Xbox360 got tired of me, and is now only displaying the Red Rings of Death.
And I just got it set up for gaming, music streaming, video streaming, DVD and HD-DVD playback. Everything was working so nicely. Figures something was bound to go wrong.
I had this unit for 1.5 years, so I was kinda hoping it would last until the next console generation would come along. Guess not.
This is the second unit I'm sending for repairs/replacement.
Sigh...
Update 2008-02-15:
They replaced the motherboard, ran an automated 2 hour test and sent it back. It's working fine now. Actually it's even running cooler and is more quiet than before. The noice level is now perfectly ok. I guess they even added some padding, since the DVD drive doesn't make such a horrible noice anymore.
I'm a happy gamer again. 1/1/2008 Edge asks: WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT? WHY?The fabulous Edge asks a great question again and gets a lot of interesting answers. "WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT? WHY?" I've just skimmed the answers, but lets see what caught my eye so far...
And for me... there is nothing recent that comes to mind, but I do recall an interesting discussion several years ago with a professor that held the course "workings of the brain" (my translation). We talked broadly about consciousness and free will. His take was that the scale is so wide that everything could be considered to have some level consiciousness. Like a rock. I disagreed. Later I've broadened my view of it radically and talking about it takes a while to set and discuss basic definitions and their meaning. And quantum theory of course. Funny how some concepts just keep lingering in the mind and you work on them for decades. Oh and I have to agree with "newborns are not the blank slates I once presumed" from Myers. Boys and girls are quite different. :-) |
