Nokia phones and the S60 platform problems

I really like my new Nokia E71. It's solid hardware and works generally really well.

But when I first got it, it took me a few days to figure it out. Using the S60 interface that is. Applications, settings and icons are all over the place! Unity and focus is sorely lacking! It takes an effort to learn to use the phone. And I need Google to check where to find certain settings. Argh.

Then there are the Nokia applications and services. Why on earth is every service and application limited to some weird set of specific phone models? Well other than apparently every single Nokia phone seems to have a different set of hardware and operating system features.

Compared to the iPod Touch (no phone), that I've used for over 6 months now, it seems Apple is 2-4 years ahead of the curve. And Nokia is standing still with S60.

Here's what I want to see Nokia phones do:
    • Make one S60_3rd platform
      • If the phone is a S60_3rd, then EVERY service and application will have to work with it. None of this "this is just for E75." crap.
      • Tag the phone with the platform logo (make a nice logo for it)
    • HTML email
      • I couldn't belive Nokia phones can't handle this yet.
      • There is the email.nokia.com service, but it's: 1) a service you give your passwords to, and 2) you will have to pay for it! (I mean come on! For email? Really?)
    • A good browser
      • Using Safari on an iPod Touch is a fabulous experience. It is a really really good browser.
    • Better user interface
      • The interface needs some radical change to make it easier to use. The elements are there, but it's currently a mess.
      • The separate applications are ok, but settings for the phone, SMS, and other core phone stuff needs more focus
    • Better standby screen
      • There is so much wasted space all around
      • Give developers access and provide good modules out-of-the-box.
    • Much better media management
      • The current way to manage music, photos and video is embarressing
      • I mean the media gallery app displays application icons... hello!
    • Much better network automation
      • Juggling WLAN and Access Point settings is a chore. And so unnecessary. Why does an application have to care what connection it has to use.
      • For several apps I need to change their settings to use them at home and at work.
      • And what's with the four mobile connection settings? Sonera Internet, Sonera MMS, Sonera Streaming, Sonera WAP? I still don't know when I'm supposed to use them.
    • Easier application installation
      • Why do I need to confirm so many dialog boxes etc.?
      • Just install it without all the fuss. Again, have a look at the iPhone.
      • Ovi Store isn't too inviting and installing apps through it takes way too many clicks and login entries.

I doubt I'll buy another Nokia phone, unless the platform gets much more attention. It looks like it hasn't been updated in several years! My ancient Nokia 6600 is 6 years old and feels pretty much the same.

I hope the E71 will stay in the game for a few years, but based on past Nokia performance, my shiny E71 will be ancient technology next year with irrelevant updates and unsupported services... (I hope not, I hope not... but I fear it will...)

    ...

    A few positive notes:
    • SportsTracker is really neat
    • At least some podcast support. (The media player doesn't do bookmarks, which is sort of crucial for podcasts.)
    • Quickoffice is nice (but I got lucky and the full version was in the E71... only a few models have it)
    • Notepad sync is great (but iPod Touch just got that too)
    • Gmail app works pretty well (only text)
    • The device itself is solid, looks and feels good. Fun to use.

    Photo Gallery at Picasa

I moved my Photo Gallery to Picasa. Hopefully I can settle on it.

(I was hitting the free limit of Flickr and the Spaces gallery seemed like a weird add-on)

    Windows Live and Social Networking

Windows Live has jumped on the social network, and now allows profile to connect to various sites, like Facebook and Digg.

    Looks promising.

I have to admit that it already takes a bit of juggling to manage all my sites. Like currently Facebook seems to be my bloggin tool, leaving this (and others) services a bit stale...

    Exiting times :-)

    Uusia Kuvia Täällä

Laitoin nipun kuluvan vuoden kuvia tähän samalle sivustolle. Oliver Photo Gallery.

Took me long enough to create a Twitter account. I think it fits me better than "real" blog posts. We'll see.

    Talvi 2008

Oli sitten ennätystylsä talvi. Tai siis lämmin. Lumisia päiviä oli yhteensä 4. Ja aurinkokin oli 4 kuukautta paksun pilviverhon takana.
Ilmatieteen laitoksen mukaan talven keskilämpötila on suurimmassa osassa Suomea korkein runsaaseen sataan vuoteen.
Tänä talvena syntynyt uusi keskilämpötilaennätys on vajaan asteen aikaisempaa korkeampi suuressa osassa maata.

    Hmm...

Onneksi en ole masentuvaa tyyppiä. Kunhan valitan. Silmänisku

    Canon IXUS 860IS

The kids broke my PowerShot (bent lens) so I needed a new camera.

I got the Canon IXUS 860IS.

It has a fairly rare 28mm wide shot that will really make a difference - more scenery, more people, etc. And with the optical image stabilizer I can leave the flash off more often. Also macro shooting has improved a lot.

And the face tracking is kinda neat. Not really the focusing, but it also adjusts exposure to make sure faces are visible.

    I like it.

Xbox360 and the Red Rings of Death

My Xbox360 got tired of me, and is now only displaying the Red Rings of Death.

And I just got it set up for gaming, music streaming, video streaming, DVD and HD-DVD playback. Everything was working so nicely. Figures something was bound to go wrong.

I had this unit for 1.5 years, so I was kinda hoping it would last until the next console generation would come along. Guess not.

This is the second unit I'm sending for repairs/replacement.

    Sigh...

    Update 2008-02-15:

They replaced the motherboard, ran an automated 2 hour test and sent it back. It's working fine now. Actually it's even running cooler and is more quiet than before. The noice level is now perfectly ok. I guess they even added some padding, since the DVD drive doesn't make such a horrible noice anymore.

    I'm a happy gamer again.

Edge asks: WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT? WHY?

The fabulous Edge asks a great question again and gets a lot of interesting answers. "WHAT HAVE YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND ABOUT? WHY?"  I've just skimmed the answers, but lets see what caught my eye so far...

I now think, then, that the opponent-process dynamics of emotions, and the roles they play in controlling our minds, is underpinned by an "economy" of neurochemistry that harnesses the competitive talents of individual neurons.
    -- DANIEL C. DENNETT

In short, I have changed my mind about how people come literally to embody the social world around them.  I once thought that we internalized cultural factors by forming memories, acquiring language, or bearing emotional and physical marks (of poverty, of conquest).  I thought that this was the limit of the ways in which our bodies were shaped by our social environment.  In particular, I thought that our genes were historically immutable, and that it was not possible to imagine a conversation between culture and genetics.  I thought that we as a species evolved over time frames far too long to be influenced by human actions.
    -- NICHOLAS A. CHRISTAKIS

Like many scientists in the field of memory, I used to think that a memory is something stored in the brain and then accessed when used. Then, in 2000, a researcher in my lab, Karim Nader, did an experiment that convinced me, and many others, that our usual way of thinking was wrong. In a nutshell, what Karim showed was that each time a memory is used, it has to be restored as a new memory in order to be accessible later.
    -- JOSEPH LEDOUX

For me, belief is not an all or nothing thing — believe or disbelieve, accept or reject.  Instead, I have degrees of belief, a subjective probability distribution over different possible ways the world could be.  This means that I am constantly changing my mind about all sorts of things, as I reflect or gain more evidence.  While I don't always think explicitly in terms of probabilities, I often do so when I give careful consideration to some matter.  And when I reflect on my own cognitive processes, I must acknowledge the graduated nature of my beliefs.
    -- NICK BOSTROM

Reading and reporting on psychological science has changed my mind many times, leading me now to believe that

    • newborns are not the blank slates I once presumed,
    • electroconvulsive therapy often alleviates intractable depression,
    • economic growth has not improved our morale,
    • the automatic unconscious mind dwarfs the controlled conscious mind,
    • traumatic experiences rarely get repressed,
    • personality is unrelated to birth order,
    • most folks have high self-esteem (which sometimes causes problems),
    • opposites do not attract,
    • sexual orientation is a natural, enduring disposition (most clearly so for men), not a choice.

    -- DAVID G. MYERS

Just suppose that  the "Cartesian theatre of consciousness", about which modern philosophers are generally so sceptical, is in fact a biological reality. Suppose indeed , that Nature has designed our brains to contain a mental theatre, designed for the very purpose of staging the qualia-rich spectacle on which we set such store. Suppose, in short,  that consciousness exists primarily for our entertainment and amazement.
I may tell you that, with this changed mind-set, I already see the facts quite differently. I hope it does the same for you, sir.
    -- NICHOLAS HUMPHREY

And for me... there is nothing recent that comes to mind, but I do recall an interesting discussion several years ago with a professor that held the course "workings of the brain" (my translation). We talked broadly about consciousness and free will. His take was that the scale is so wide that everything could be considered to have some level consiciousness. Like a rock. I disagreed. Later I've broadened my view of it radically and talking about it takes a while to set and discuss basic definitions and their meaning. And quantum theory of course. Funny how some concepts just keep lingering in the mind and you work on them for decades.

Oh and I have to agree with "newborns are not the blank slates I once presumed" from Myers. Boys and girls are quite different. :-)
